Men's Mileage Clubs

There are alot of different ingredients that go into creating a successful distance runner, or a team of distance runners. But probably the most important ingredient toward competitive success is preparation through consistent hard work done in the preseason. To encourage that work, we are starting mileage clubs. We will list here any young man who logs greater than 400 miles in the summer. Young men who run 500 miles or more will also get a t-shirt (assuming we find out that this is not in violation of IHSA rules), listing how many miles they ran that summer, in incrememnts of 100 (i.e., a 600 Mile Club shirt for a guy who runs 636 miles).

To qualify for these clubs, an athlete has to complete their mileage between June 1st, and the first day of Cross Country practice in the fall, usually a period of 10-11 weeks. A summer log of miles run will be accepted, or a list from the Coach of athletes who have completed this goal.

We should clarify that increases in mileage should be gradual and consistent. Freshman should probably not attempt the 600 mile club, but perhaps work to move up a level each year and aim for 600 miles by their senior year. While hard work improves runners, a drastic sudden increase can cause injuries and ruin a season.

Note that we are starting this list in the fall of 2008. We are certain many athletes in Morton past have completed this type of mileage, but without records, we can only list athletes from 2008 on.
